The Appalachian Psychoanalytic Society

The Appalachian Psychoanalytic Society (APS) offers a variety of educational and collegial experiences to mental health professionals in this region who desire to maintain awareness of current developments in psychoanalysis. Our organization is a Local Chapter of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association (APA) based in Knoxville, Tennessee with membership spanning Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee as well as Asheville, North Carolina.

Membership is not limited to individuals practicing in a predominately psychoanalytic modality. We want to encourage anyone interested in psychoanalytic theory and treatment or simply wanting to learn more about psychoanalytic thinking to explore membership in Appalachian Psychoanalytic Society.

The objectives of the Society are as follows:

	To provide a forum for scholarly and clinical exchanges for psychoanalytic psychologists and other mental health professionals interested in psychoanalysis.
	To provide a vehicle to foster and improve psychoanalytic training and skill development through both informal and formal educational and training activities for psychoanalytic psychologists and other mental health professionals interested in psychoanalysis.
	To promote research within local chapters and to assist where possible in the coordination of any projects in which several local chapter members may participate jointly.
	To provide a forum for constructive expression and discussion of professional concerns for psychoanalytic therapists and other mental health professionals interested in psychoanalysis.

APS offers membership in a variety of categories. Full Membership is available to Division 39 Members as well as to other mental health professionals licensed (or license-eligible) or certified for independent practice. Scholar Membership is available to interested members of the academic or professional communities with a scholarly interest in psychoanalysis. Student Membership is available to graduate students who are enrolled in a recognized graduate program in mental health. Only Full Members may vote for, and hold office in, the Society.

Program

	APS currently schedules two all day workshops each year addressing issues of psychoanalytic theory and therapy. Workshops feature nationally recognized clinicians and theorists.
	A Scholars Symposium is held at least once a year featuring local speakers presenting original research, theory and/or clinical material. These symposia are held in Knoxville and Nashville.
	Membership meetings are held at least once a year in both Nashville and Knoxville, with brief programs presented by local members.
	Current educational activities include a Saturday Morning Seminar Series covering a wide array of topics of interest to clinicians. APS also offers in-depth courses on psychoanalytic theory, diagnosis and treatment.

Committees

University Liaison: This committee works to maintain contact between APS and the university community, students and faculty in planning programs of joint interest.

Education: This committee works to develop courses, seminars, reading groups, etc. that address need for continuing education for general membership.

Public Education: This committee develops programs to reach out to the general public about the value and accessibility of psychoanalytic treatment.
