SEMINAR GOALS

Educational Objectives:

    • Illustrate the psychodynamics of borderline personality disorder

    • Describe the importance of collateral contact with colleagues and family in the treatment of primitive mental states

    • Define the difference between relating and forming a relationship within psychoanalytic technique

    • Illustrate with clinical examples the meaning and use of psychoanalytic space within the clinical situation
 

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

The seminar will explore theory and cutting edge therapeutic technique with individuals who manifest severe borderline personality disorder. This will be accomplished through a careful in vivo reading of a provocative case study by Masud Khan.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jim Gorney received his doctorate in Human Development from the University of Chicago. He was on the supervisory staff at the Austin Riggs Center and received his psychoanalytic training at the William Alanson White Institute. Dr. Gorney has held faculty appointments at New York Hospital-Cornell, Duquesne, and the University of Tennessee. He is the author of numerous papers on psychoanalytic technique, Winnicott, Lacan, and Self Psychology. Currently, he is in the independent practice of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and professional consultation in Knoxville. Jim is a former president of APS.
