DESCRIPTION |
| Partners construct images of the other and
of the self in the course of their life together, and then without
knowing it, relate to the image, rather than to the partner.
Intensive affects, positive and negative, stem from and then feed these
representations. Both psychoanalytic and systemic theories
contribute to our understanding of how these images are created and
perpetuated. Once there is some clarity and consciousness of the
way in which the constructions and the attendant affects have evolved,
the triad (the couple plus the therapist) can explore the alternatives
to projection and projective identification. In this way new, more
balanced, loving and generous representations can come into being. |
| |
|
OBJECTIVES |
| Participants will learn: |
 | How marital partners create fixed psychological images of the
other. |
 | How the relationship comes to be based on the perpetuation of
those images. |
 | How intense positive and negative affects stem from, and feed
these representations. |
|
| In Dr. Stechler's words; "Once there is some clarity and
consciousness of the way in which the constructions and the attendant
affects have evolved, the triad (couple plus the therapist) can explore
the alternatives to projection and projective identification. In
this way new, more balanced, loving and generous representations can
come into being." |
